Bukit Teraja
A jungle waterfall reached through an Iban longhouse community in Belait District
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Duration
- 3-4 hours return, about 6 km in total
Bukit Teraja is reached from Kampong Teraja, an Iban longhouse community in the Labi area of Belait District, whose land borders the forest reserve. From the longhouse, a roughly 40 minute climb through dense jungle, crossing several streams and logs, leads to Wasai Teraja, a waterfall that drops into a clear pool deep enough to swim in. The wider Teraja forest is recognised for its biodiversity and has been the subject of conservation proposals with WWF and the Forestry Department.
Highlights
- Wasai Teraja waterfall and its swimmable pool
- A genuine jungle approach, crossing streams and fallen logs
- The Teraja Longhouse Iban community at the trailhead
- Forest recognised for its biodiversity and conservation value
Getting there
Kampong Teraja is reached via the Labi road, about a two hour drive from Bandar Seri Begawan through Belait District. There is no public transport this far along the Labi road; a private car or taxi is needed.
Safety tips
The stream crossings and log bridges are the main hazard, especially after rain, when they turn slippery and the water underneath rises. Wear shoes you do not mind getting wet, since staying dry is not really an option on this route, and treat the pool at the waterfall with the same caution as any natural swimming spot: check depth and current before jumping in.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip you do not mind soaking through the crossings
- A change of clothes for after the pool
- Cash for the BND$3 sign-in fee
- Insect repellent and a trekking pole for the stream crossings
