Book through the official authority, not a stranger’s chat group
Every park on this site links to the government department, state forestry office or park corporation that actually issues the permit. Book or pay through that channel, or through a guide company they officially list, and keep the receipt.

Check the guide is licensed
Parks that require a permit usually also require a registered guide, such as Taman Negara, Fraser’s Hill and Gunung Mulu. Ask for the guide’s registration number and verify it with the park office before you pay a deposit.

Be wary of trips organised only through social media
A trip that only exists as an Instagram or Threads post, with payment to a personal bank account and no permit reference number, is much harder to verify or get a refund from if something goes wrong. Ask to see the permit or booking confirmation before paying in full.

Check the season before you go
Malaysia’s east coast and Borneo’s interior are affected by the Northeast Monsoon from November to March, when trails flood and some parks close entirely. Singapore’s rain falls year round but is heaviest from November to January. Always check the current trail status page of the relevant authority on the morning you leave.

Tell someone your plan
Share your route, your group size and your expected return time with someone who is not on the hike. For remote multi-day treks, register with the park office as required and carry a means of calling for help.
If something looks wrong
If a trip organiser cannot produce a valid permit number or refuses to say which authority issued it, do not pay. You can verify a park permit directly with the issuing office using the contact details on that park’s page on this site.
