Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park
Brunei's largest natural lake, and the first ASEAN Heritage Park on the calendar
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Duration
- 1-3 hours across the park’s boardwalk and forest trails
Tasek Merimbun is an S-shaped lake at the heart of a roughly 7,800-hectare park in Tutong District, about 70 km from Bandar Seri Begawan. Designated in 1984, it was ASEAN's first Heritage Park, valued as a wildlife sanctuary, a swamp forest and the home of the indigenous Dusun community, whose cultural displays sit alongside the walking trails. A shorter boardwalk and a longer forest trail give visitors a choice between a gentle lakeside stroll and a proper walk into the swamp forest.
Highlights
- The S-shaped lake itself, Brunei's largest natural body of water
- Swamp forest and its associated birdlife
- Dusun cultural displays alongside the trails
- Bukit Birup's Trail for a wider view over the lake
Getting there
The park is about 70 km, roughly an hour and a half, from Bandar Seri Begawan via Tutong town. There is no public transport to the park; most visitors drive or arrange a car.
Safety tips
The boardwalk sections are the easiest walking on this site, but they are built over water and can be slick when wet, so normal care applies. The longer forest trail is genuine jungle and should be treated with the same respect as any other Brunei forest walk: insects, heat and the chance of losing the path if you wander off the marked route.
What to bring
- Insect repellent for the swamp forest sections
- Sun protection for the open boardwalk stretches
- A camera for the lake views and the cultural displays
- Water, since there is little for sale away from the entrance
