Bali's most-climbed volcano sits inside a vast ancient caldera beside Lake Batur, part of Indonesia's first UNESCO Global Geopark. Guided groups leave Kintamani in darkness, climbing a well-trodden path of volcanic ash and rock for around two hours to reach the crater rim in time for sunrise over the caldera and, on clear mornings, Mount Agung beyond.

Getting there
Batur is about 1.5 to 2 hours by road from south Bali's main tourist areas; guided tours typically include hotel pickup around midnight for the pre-dawn start from Kintamani.
Safety tips
The path is straightforward but loose volcanic gravel makes footing unreliable in the dark, and it can be crowded with headlamp queues in peak season; stay with the guide group and wear real hiking shoes, not sandals.
