Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park centres on an ancient caldera, its floor a flat expanse of volcanic ash known as the Sea of Sand. Most visitors arrive before dawn by jeep to Mount Penanjakan for the sunrise view over Bromo, Batok and Semeru, then cross the Sea of Sand and climb around 250 steps to peer into Bromo's still-smoking crater.

Getting there
Fly into Surabaya, then transfer by road (about 3 to 4 hours) to Cemoro Lawang village on the Probolinggo side, or a similar drive from the Malang side; jeep tours to Penanjakan and the crater start from either village before 3am.
Safety tips
Bromo's alert level can change; follow current exclusion-zone distances from the crater rim and never approach if activity is elevated. Sulfur fumes drift across the rim path, and pre-dawn temperatures on the Sea of Sand drop close to freezing.
