Mount Rinjani National Park

Indonesia's second-highest volcano, climbed over several days to a turquoise crater lake and a sunrise summit

Difficulty
Expert
Duration
2-4 days for the summit and Segara Anak crater lake circuit
Summit elevation
3726 m

At 3,726 metres, Rinjani is Indonesia's second-highest volcano and one of Southeast Asia's classic multi-day treks. Routes from Sembalun or Senaru climb through savannah grassland and forest to the crater rim, descend to the turquoise Segara Anak lake and its hot springs, and push for the summit before dawn over loose volcanic scree.

Highlights

  • Sunrise summit push over volcanic scree to 3,726 metres
  • Segara Anak crater lake and its natural hot springs
  • Open savannah grassland on the Sembalun approach
  • Gunung Baru Jari, Rinjani's still-active inner cone

Getting there

Fly into Lombok International Airport near Praya, then transfer by road (about 2.5 to 3 hours) to the Sembalun or Senaru trailhead villages, where registered trekking operators are based.

Safety tips

Altitude, exposed scree and sudden weather changes make the summit push the trek's most demanding stretch; a licensed guide, mandatory insurance and a medical check before departure are non-negotiable, and trekkers should confirm the current safe-zone status on the TNGR website before booking.

What to bring

  • Warm layers for the pre-dawn summit push
  • Sturdy trekking boots with ankle support
  • Headlamp and water treatment for the multi-day route
  • Proof of travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking
