Mount Hakkoda

A cluster of volcanic peaks above Aomori, reached by ropeway to an alpine marsh and onward ridge trails

Difficulty
Moderate
Duration
45 minutes to an hour for the marsh loop from the ropeway station; 4 to 6 hours to link several peaks
Summit elevation
1585 m

Hakkoda is a group of volcanic peaks in Towada-Hachimantai National Park, the highest of which, Mount Odake, reaches 1,585 metres. The Hakkoda Ropeway carries visitors from the valley floor up to Tamoyachi-dake in about ten minutes, landing them beside a boardwalk loop through a small alpine marsh with views across the whole range. From there, marked trails continue on to Akakura-dake and Odake for hikers who want a longer day on the ridge.

Highlights

  • A boardwalk loop through an alpine marsh just off the ropeway station
  • Onward ridge trails to Akakura-dake and Odake for a longer traverse
  • Famous winter juhyo (wind-sculpted "snow monsters") on the same slopes in season
  • Hot spring baths at the mountain’s foot for after the hike

Getting there

The ropeway base station is about a 40 minute bus ride from Aomori Station or Aomori Airport, on the road toward Lake Towada. Buses run several times a day in the hiking season.

Safety tips

The boardwalk loop near the ropeway station is gentle and family-friendly, but the ridge trails beyond it are genuine alpine terrain with fast-changing weather and no shelter. Hakkoda’s notorious 1902 winter tragedy, in which most of an army training party died in a blizzard, is still taught locally as a reason to respect the mountain’s weather rather than a period curiosity: check conditions before heading past the marsh loop.

What to bring

  • Layered clothing; temperatures at the ropeway top are noticeably colder than the valley
  • Rain shell, since mountain weather changes quickly
  • Trekking shoes for anything beyond the boardwalk loop
  • Cash for the ropeway and the hot spring baths at the base
