Broga Hill
A short climb before sunrise, for the carpet of cloud below the peaks
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Duration
- 1.5 to 2 hours to the peaks and back, usually timed for sunrise
- Summit elevation
- 400 m
Broga Hill, in Semenyih about 40 kilometres south of Kuala Lumpur, is climbed almost entirely in the dark for one reason: the sea of mist that fills the valley below its peaks at first light. The trail crosses three grassy summits in quick succession, gaining roughly 400 metres in a little over an hour, before flattening out into open ridge walking with views back over Semenyih and the plantations beyond it.
Highlights
- A cloud inversion filling the valley below, on a clear morning
- Three grassy summits reached in quick succession
- A short enough climb to do before a full day of something else
- Wide views back over Semenyih from the open ridge
Getting there
The main entrance is about 40 kilometres, roughly an hour, south of central Kuala Lumpur through Semenyih. There is no public transport to the trailhead; most hikers drive or book a spot on one of the sunrise tour vans that run from the city.
Safety tips
The climb itself is short and not technical, but it is walked in the dark by design, so a head torch is not optional and neither is checking the ground rather than the view on the way up. The open ridge has no shelter if a storm builds later in the morning, and the grass turns slick fast in rain.
What to bring
- A head torch, since most hikers start well before sunrise
- A light jacket for the ridge, which catches the wind before the sun is up
- Water and a snack, since there is nothing sold on the trail itself
- A camera or phone charged for the summit, not just the walk up
