Bukit Kiara

A federal forest park behind the TTDI running and hiking crowd, reopened in 2026 after a long renovation

Difficulty
Moderate
Duration
45 minutes for the paved lake loop alone, up to 3 hours for a full circuit taking in the Rock Garden and the summit ridge
Summit elevation
250 m

Bukit Kiara is the large forested federal park behind Taman Tun Dr Ismail, not the smaller flat recreational ground nearby that Kuala Lumpur City Hall renamed Taman Awam Bukit Kiara in 2020 to reduce exactly this confusion. From the TTDI Park entrance, trails of varying difficulty climb through secondary forest to a roughly 250 metre summit area, past the Rock Garden and Kiara Waterfall, and the park is shared with a well-used mountain-biking network. It is managed by the National Landscape Department, a federal body, not by City Hall.

Highlights

  • Kiara Waterfall and the Rock Garden rock outcrop along the trail network
  • A large lake with a flat, paved jogging loop at the TTDI Park end for an easier option
  • Genuine secondary forest birdlife, including crested goshawk and black-naped oriole
  • A well-used mountain-biking network sharing the same trails, so stay alert on narrower sections

Getting there

TTDI MRT station on the Kajang Line is the nearest rail stop, about 8 to 10 minutes on foot via Exit B to the TTDI Park entrance on Jalan Aminuddin Baki. Bukit Kiara and Bukit Kiara Selatan MRT stations are also nearby but are less commonly used by hikers.

Safety tips

Trails are shared with mountain bikers, so keep to the side on narrower sections and stay alert at blind corners. The upper Rock Garden and ridge sections become genuinely slippery after heavy rain; the lower paved lake loop is the safer choice in wet conditions. Given the site’s recent, uneven reopening, check current trail status before setting out for a specific named route rather than assuming everything mapped is passable.

What to bring

  • Trail shoes with grip; the Rock Garden and ridge sections get loose and rocky
  • Water, since the paved loop has no stalls and the upper trails have even less shade
  • A phone map or downloaded trail map, since recent construction has changed some junctions
  • Insect repellent for the forested upper sections
