Bukit Tabur

A white quartz ridge above the Klang Gates Dam, walked with a guide since 2023

Difficulty
Hard
Duration
3 to 4 hours for the West ridge return
Summit elevation
411 m

Bukit Tabur is the exposed quartz ridge that runs above the Klang Gates Dam in Gombak, close enough to central Kuala Lumpur to be one of the most walked hills in the Klang Valley. The West ridge, reached from a trailhead near Taman Melawati, climbs quickly to 411 metres along a narrow crest of white rock with drops on both sides. It is the scrambling and the exposure that give the hill its reputation, not the distance.

Highlights

  • The white quartz ridge itself, visible from much of Kuala Lumpur
  • Views over the Klang Gates Dam and the city skyline beyond it
  • Sections of hand-and-foot scrambling along the exposed crest
  • A short enough round trip to combine with a second hill in the same morning

Getting there

The West trailhead is about 30 to 40 minutes from central Kuala Lumpur, behind Taman Melawati near the Klang Gates Dam. Parking is limited on weekend mornings, when the hill is at its busiest.

Safety tips

The ridge is narrow, exposed on both sides, and turns slippery quickly when the quartz gets wet, which is why a registered guide has been compulsory here since February 2023, ahead of the general 600 metre rule. Lightning is a real risk on an open ridge with no cover; the club calls off an ascent rather than crossing it while a storm is building.

What to bring

  • Shoes with real grip for the quartz, wet or dry
  • A hat and sun protection: the ridge has almost no shade
  • More water than the short distance suggests, given the scrambling
  • A head for exposure, or a good reason to go with someone who checks in on that before the ridge
