Cameron Highlands

Malaysia's best-known hill station, with a network of numbered forest trails

Difficulty
Moderate
Duration
2-5 hours per trail
Summit elevation
2031 m

This colonial-era hill station sits above 1,500 metres, ringed by tea plantations and around 30 numbered trails through cool montane forest. Routes range from an easy hour near Tanah Rata to a full-day summit of Gunung Brinchang.

Highlights

  • Mossy forest boardwalk near the Gunung Brinchang summit
  • Tea plantation viewpoints on Trail 1 and around the BOH estates
  • Robinson Waterfall via Trail 9
  • Strawberry and vegetable farms around Brinchang town

Getting there

Buses and shared taxis run from Ipoh, Tapah and Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata and Brinchang, the two main towns.

Safety tips

Mist rolls in quickly at altitude and hikers have gone missing on unmarked or closed trails in the past. Stick to open, numbered trails, tell someone your route, and turn back if visibility drops.

What to bring

  • Warm layer, since evenings drop below 15°C
  • Rain jacket
  • Good grip shoes for muddy, root-covered paths
