Gua Batu Maloi

A granite boulder cave you swim, squeeze and wade, inside the Gunung Tampin Forest Reserve

Difficulty
Hard
Duration
3-4 hours underground, plus the walk in

Batu Maloi is not a limestone cave. It is the space beneath a jumble of granite boulders in a river bed, which means the route is a sequence of squeezes, climbs and swims rather than a walk through chambers. Water is around you for most of it, from waist to chest deep. The reserve straddles the Negeri Sembilan and Melaka boundary, and the trailhead sits roughly 35 km from Kuala Pilah.

Highlights

  • A granite cave formed by tectonic movement, not by water dissolving rock
  • Continuous water from waist to chest deep for most of the route
  • Narrow squeezes that give the cave its reputation
  • Forest walk in through the Gunung Tampin reserve

Getting there

The reserve entrance is about 15 km from Tampin town and roughly 35 km from Kuala Pilah, reached on minor roads through Johol. Operators normally meet groups in Tampin and drive in together, which is the simplest way to find the trailhead.

Safety tips

Two things make this one of the more serious days out on this site. The passages are genuinely tight, so claustrophobia is a real reason not to go. And the cave floods: water levels have risen fast enough after heavy rain to trap people inside. A certified guide is required, and the reason is not paperwork.

What to bring

  • A helmet and head torch, normally supplied by the operator
  • Clothes and shoes you will be soaked in for hours
  • A full dry change left in the vehicle
  • Nothing in your pockets that water will ruin
