Gunung Datuk
A short, steep climb up a granite dome to a 360 degree view of the Strait of Malacca
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Duration
- About 3 hours return
- Summit elevation
- 884 m
Gunung Datuk is the highest point in the Rembau district and, at only 884 metres, one of the shortest true summits on this site: most hikers are up and down in about three hours. The trail starts with a rainbow-painted concrete stairway, then turns to bare granite slabs held with fixed ropes for the final push. What makes it worth the detour is the top: an open, largely treeless summit with an unobstructed 360 degree view over the surrounding plains to the Strait of Malacca.
Highlights
- The rainbow-painted stairway at the start of the climb
- Fixed ropes on the bare granite summit push
- An open 360 degree summit view to the Strait of Malacca
- A short enough round trip to pair with another stop the same day
Getting there
The trailhead is just outside Rembau town, about an hour south of Kuala Lumpur off the North South Expressway, and roughly 40 minutes from Seremban. There is no public transport to the registration counter; most visitors drive.
Safety tips
The granite slabs near the summit are the main hazard: they are walkable in dry weather with the fixed ropes but become genuinely slippery when wet, and the site is popular enough that queues form on the ropes at weekends. Turn back rather than push past a queue on wet rock.
What to bring
- Gloves for the fixed ropes
- Grippy shoes rather than smooth-soled trainers
- Water; there is shade on the lower stairway but none at the summit
- Cash for the registration fee
