Gunung Raya
Langkawi's highest point, climbed by a 4,287-step stairway or reached by road for views over the whole archipelago
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Duration
- 3 to 5 hours return on foot via the Thousand Memories Eagle Stairs, or a short drive if you take the summit road instead
- Summit elevation
- 881 m
At 881 m, Gunung Raya is the highest peak on Langkawi island and sits inside a UNESCO Global Geopark protected forest reserve. Most visitors reach the summit area by the sealed road that winds up through the reserve to a viewing point and a temple near the top; the more committed route is the Thousand Memories Eagle Stairs, a long stepped trail through granite forest that the Kedah Forestry Department classes as a permit-and-guide hike rather than a casual walk. The true summit itself, fenced and holding a communications station, is off limits to visitors either way.
Highlights
- The Thousand Memories Eagle Stairs, 4,287 steps through granite forest
- Views over the whole Langkawi archipelago and, on a clear day, across to Thailand
- A small temple and viewing platform near the summit road’s end
- Dense forest that stays noticeably cooler than the coast below
Getting there
From Kuah or Pantai Cenang, drive towards the island’s interior following signs for Gunung Raya; the summit road turnoff is well marked. The Eagle Stairs trailhead is signposted separately, lower down the same road, and there is no public transport to either.
Safety tips
The stair trail has no shade for long stretches and no water source, so heat is a bigger risk than elevation here; carry more water than the distance suggests. If driving, the summit road is narrow with blind bends used by tour vans, so keep a low speed on the way up and down.
What to bring
- At least 2 litres of water for the stair route, more in hot weather
- Sun protection, since much of the stairway is exposed
- Cash for the i-Forest permit if you have not paid online in advance
- Small change for the temple donation box near the summit
