Mount Batulao

A jagged ridgeline day hike over rolling grass peaks, close enough for a Manila sunrise trip

Difficulty
Moderate
Duration
4-6 hours for the classic loop or traverse
Summit elevation
811 m

Batulao's serrated ridgeline of grassy peaks rises abruptly from the Batangas countryside, making it one of the most photographed day hikes within easy reach of Manila. The Old Trail climbs steeply and directly to the summit ridge, while the longer traverse links a chain of lesser peaks before descending the New Trail, both offering open views with almost no forest cover.

Highlights

  • The jagged, near-treeless summit ridgeline
  • 360-degree views over Batangas and, on clear days, Taal Lake
  • A dramatic sunrise start beating the midday heat
  • The full east-to-west traverse linking multiple peaks

Getting there

From Manila, drive or take a bus (about 2 hours) via the STAR Tollway toward Nasugbu, Batangas; the Old Trail and New Trail jump-offs are both a short tricycle ride from the highway.

Safety tips

The exposed grassy slopes offer little shade and get very hot by midday, and can turn slippery underfoot in rain; a sunrise or early-morning start is safer and far more comfortable than a midday climb.

What to bring

  • Sun protection and a hat: the trail is almost entirely exposed
  • Plenty of water, as there are few shaded rest points
  • Grippy trail shoes for loose, dusty or muddy sections
  • Cash for the registration and guide fee
