At 2,922 metres, Pulag is the highest peak in Luzon and the third-highest in the Philippines. The Ambangeg trail, the easiest and most popular of four official routes, climbs through pine forest and mossy woodland to the open dwarf-bamboo grassland of the summit plateau, where a pre-dawn push is timed for the sea-of-clouds view as the sun rises over the Cordillera.

Getting there

From Manila, take a bus (about 6-8 hours) to Baguio, then a jeepney or arranged transfer (about 2-3 hours) to the Ambangeg jump-off in Bokod, Benguet.

Safety tips

Hypothermia, not altitude, is the main real risk on Pulag; summit-area temperatures can fall near or below freezing, so warm layers are not optional. Stay with the mandatory guide at all times, since fog can close in quickly on the open grassland.

Fee: A DENR conservation fee of PHP 250 on weekdays or PHP 350 on weekends and holidays for Filipino nationals, plus a PHP 25-50 admin fee; foreign visitors should confirm the current international rate directly with the protected area office
Apply at least: Book the DENR permit and mandatory guide well ahead; daily trekkers are capped at 500 across all trails and groups at 10 people, so weekend and holiday slots fill quickly
