Rail Corridor
A 24 km former railway line turned into one continuous green corridor the length of the island
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Duration
- 1 to 6 hours depending on how much of the 21 km northern stretch you walk
The Rail Corridor follows the route of the former KTM railway line, which closed in 2011 after more than a century linking Singapore to Malaysia. NParks has converted it into a continuous green corridor with over 50 access points, running from Kranji in the north down through Bukit Timah towards the city. Rail Corridor North, the roughly 21 km stretch from Kranji to Spooner Road, is fully open; sections further south have gone through phased trail improvement works, so check the current notice before planning a route that far.
Highlights
- Former railway bridges and viaducts along the route
- A continuous green link crossing the island north to south
- The Kranji node, the new northern gateway with its own short nature trail
- Connections into Bukit Timah and Central Catchment along the way
Getting there
The northern end starts opposite Kranji MRT station, across a pedestrian bridge to the new Kranji node. More than 50 other access points run the length of the corridor, so most hikers simply join and leave from whichever is nearest.
Safety tips
The corridor is a shared path used by walkers and cyclists together, so keep to the correct side and stay aware behind you. Surfaces vary from paved sections to loose ballast and gravel, which can turn an ankle if you are not watching your footing, and long open stretches have no shelter from sun or sudden rain.
What to bring
- Shoes suited to loose gravel, not just pavement
- Sun protection for the long open stretches
- Water, since shops are only near the access roads
- A bicycle bell or a habit of calling out if you are walking, since cyclists share the path
