Ba Vi rises abruptly from the Red River plain about 60 km west of Hanoi, its three peaks (Vua, Tan Vien and Ngoc Hoa) capped by pine forest, a Ho Chi Minh memorial temple and the roofless ruins of a French colonial hill station abandoned after the 1940s. Well-maintained steps and paths make the summit approachable in a half day.

Getting there

Ba Vi is about 60 km and 1.5 to 2 hours by road west of central Hanoi, reachable by private car, motorbike or an organised day tour.

Safety tips

The summit paths are stepped and well maintained, making this a low-risk hike; the main hazards are wet, mossy stone steps after rain and the occasional low-visibility mist near the top.

Fee: Around 60,000 VND general entry, with a lower walking rate of about 15,000 VND for hikers on foot; guide services can be booked at the gate for 300,000 VND per group per route

How to apply: Pay the entrance fee at the gate; the trail to the summit temple area is well marked and manageable without a guide, though one can be hired on site for a fuller natural history tour.

Ba Vi is often misty year-round, which suits its cool-climate pine forest character but can limit the summit view; clearer visibility is more likely in the cooler months.
