At 3,143 metres, Fansipan is the highest point in Vietnam and in mainland Southeast Asia. The classic route climbs from Tram Ton Pass through montane forest and rhododendron thickets to the summit, now shared with a cable car station, over one demanding day or a gentler two-day trek with a night in a mountain hut.

Getting there
Fly or take the overnight train to Lao Cai, then transfer by road (about an hour) to Sapa town, where trekking agencies organise the drive to the Tram Ton trailhead.
Safety tips
The upper trail is exposed rock and can ice over outside the warmest months; a licensed guide, warm layers and good boots are essential even though the cable car makes the summit area feel accessible. Weather above the cloud line changes with little warning.
